Migrating to Odoo

Successful migrations move business outcomes into Odoo. They do not recreate every legacy workaround just because it existed.

1. Step 1

   Inventory what you actually use

   List systems, reports, integrations, and customizations that matter every week. Ignore shelfware. Migration scope should follow usage, not nostalgia.

2. Step 2

   Decide what not to migrate

   Old custom fields, unused workflows, and one-off reports often cost more to recreate than they return. Prefer standard Odoo flows wherever they fit 80% of the need.

3. Step 3

   Map master data carefully

   Products, customers, vendors, chart of accounts, and open documents need clear owners and transformation rules. Bad masters poison every module that touches them.

4. Step 4

   Pilot with real operators

   Run a controlled pilot on a product family, warehouse, or sales team. Capture defects early while change is still cheap.

5. Step 5

   Cut over with a hypercare plan

   Freeze legacy changes, migrate opening balances, communicate the cutover window, and staff support for the first weeks. Migrations fail in the handoff more often than in the import script.
